The PPGA and more

Welcome to the web home of the Piss Poor Golfers Association ... as well as other various thoughts from the Commish. (And don't forget to ask me about making a birdie on No. 15 at Augusta National.)

A foil for Hausdorf?

The Piss Poor Golfers Association met for the annual Crim Challenge on Sunday, May 21 at scenic Cedar Crest Country Club on Quincy's north side.

We'll get to what happened at the top of the leaderboard in a moment. First, we have to go to the bottom where a record-setting performance nearly happened. We haven't witnessed such play since our "Hard-core" legend, George Hausdorf, stepped away from the tour to make the city of Canton run.

Making his PPGA debut, Lincoln Lieber, nearly pulled the equivalent of hitting a home run in your first big-league at-bat. He seriously threatened Hausdorf's record total of 129 by touring the 5,879-yard Cedar Crest layout in 123 strokes. It was a mere six shots off the record. Hopefully, Hausdorf is checking in with the blog. We have to get both men out again to see who truly is the hard core champion. The best part was Lincoln did it with a smile, just like Hausdorf would have done. Good work, Linc! (And where are you, George?)

OK, back to the top. The Commish was tied for the lead going into the back nine by choked badly down the stretch. Although his choke job wasn't as bad as EE's. EE neeeded seven putts on No. 9, which cost him the title. EE had a four-putt seven on No. 9 on his first try and a three-putt 6 on his second attempt at the par-5 closing hole. That allowed FedEx Bob to sneak away with the title.

In claiming his first PPGA crown, the dude who has to put up with Noodlehauser more than the rest of us was consistently mediocre. He shot a 44 on the front, tying him with DOB, and a 45 on the back to finish with an 89 and take the title by one shot over EE. The tournament namesake was two shots back, while DOB was four shots off the pace after stumbling home with a 49.

Linc was one of three PPGAers to shoot over PPGA par. Weast had a 3-over 103, while Noodle had a 5-over 105.

Noodle made his season debut despite not being released from the doctor yet. He's not good enough to work, but he can play golf. Amazing! And congrats for Slappy of the Week honors for that one.

(Seriously, slappy honors could go for something I saw at the Abbey the night before. A local high school basketball coach who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty had a hot woman ask him to take a body shot off her. He said no because she was married. Huh? And this guy hangs out with Weast, who has no morals. Unbelievable!)

We had one non-competing marker in the field (formerly known as ex-officio members). Mike Maas was brought down by watching Noodle and Linc hack it around and shot a dismal (for him) 85. Maas gets hazard pay for watching Noodle threaten to post the first Gough of the season (by the way, what happened to him?) Noodle had an 11 on No. 4. Lincoln also put up three 10s on his card.

No one hit a green until we got to No. 2 the second time around. Crim barely kept a ball on the green, earning him three skins. DOB claimed the other one on No. 14.

We'll try again on Sunday, June 4. We'll either head up to Hamilton or over to Monroe City, wherever you guys would like to go. Looking ahead, our next event won't be until June 25 since no one but Crim, who was styling in his new cart at Cedar Crest, can get out to play on Father's Day.

Without further delay, here is the latest batch of PPGA rankings (remember, we only count greenie money won for the non-competing markers. You guys shouldn't be hanging with us anyway.)
