Damn the Cardinals
* Too bad the Cubs' fans worst nightmare isn't going to happen - a White Sox-Cardinals World Series. What would Cubs fans do if that ever happened? Continue to cry about missing out in 2003?
* Best stat of the NLCS - prior to Houston's win Wednesday night the Astros had been 0-5 in LCS title-clinching games. Only one team had a worse record. The Flubs at 0-6 after three-game meltdowns in 1984 and 2003. If it wasn't for my 87-year-old grandfather being a Cubs fans, I'd really hate that franchise. Well, maybe not the franchise so much as their idiot, drunken fans.
* Have to admit I'll miss this incarnation of Busch Stadium. My dad took me to my first game there and I was able to take my oldest son to three games there the past two years. Watching him look around that stadium for the first time last year damn near brought tears to my eyes. He's already a Cardinals fans. No need to call DCFS.
* I'll take the White Sox in six games. They're starting pitching is actually deeper than the Astros' staff. Paul Konerko is the Carlos Beltran of these playoffs. His big October hits will lead to plenty of $$$$ on the free-agent market this winter. Plus, the White Sox have former Gems hurler Neal Cotts on their roster. Did you know a Gems alum has never lost in the World Series before? (An ex-Gem has never won either, but why quibble?)
* Was clicking around the TV before Game 6 and stumbled upon Tiger Woods and Willie Mays yapping about golf on ESPN. Willie Mays was trying to talk about how Tiger's lived the hard life. Whatever. Tiger's response:
"If it wasn't for guys like Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson and ... (awkward silence) and guys like Charlie Sifford on the PGA Tour, blah, blah, blah."
Tiger's obviously not a baseball historian.
* Who allowed Kerry Robinson to have a press pass as the Cardinals Insider for Fox Sports Midwest? Bring back Darnell Coles!!!! And will Robinson finally get to bring down the No. 0 on the right field wall now?
* Many Fighting Irish haters had a good time with ND's last-second loss against USC last week. It was a tough one to digest. But what that showed is that Charlie Weis has ND back on the fast track to being a nationally important program again. Irish fans will soon have the last laugh again.
* Am I crazy to have flipped back to the Chicago Bulls-Boston Celtics exhibition game Wednesday during breaks in the Cardinals game?

A hair too early to say if Charlie (Waddling onto midfield to no avail near the end of the USC game) Weis has saved Notre Dumb. A good coach? Yes. The savior? Time will tell.
Better mark the Vols game in the book ...
